AI in science: Bliss or curse?

At the Futurist of The Year Szkoła Główna Mikołaja Kopernika SGMK in Warsaw I was interviewed on my views on AI ethics and science. Here are some of my key statements:

  • Is AI a danger? AI in itself is not yet a danger because it does not have the type of agency needed to be dangerous. However, AI can be a dangerous extension for evil humans, making it easier to act on a larger scale and at higher speed than before.
  • The impact of AI on science is ambiguous. On the one hand, AI makes it possible to analyze data to an extent we’ve never been able to before. At the same time, AI is also being abused to create fake scientific papers. So, it is both a blessing and a curse.
  • Advice for today’s students: Keep up to date with AI. See what they can achieve with it within the boundaries of honesty, of course. It’s important to see how it can empower them but also to be aware of where it threatens to take over some of their autonomy.
  • On SGMK’s purchase of a super-fast computer: it’s a huge privilege for students to study in an environment with state-of-the-art technology. On the one hand, it’s an opportunity to benefit from tools that not everyone might have at their disposal. At the same time, it’s a duty to use it responsibly, which puts students into a pioneering role. With that role come rights and responsibilities.
  • Is AI science or science fiction? AI is a topic for various sciences and needs to be approached according to high scientific standards. Bringing AI from a science fiction topic into science is crucial because the more we use AI, the higher the stakes in case of errors. We need it to be integrated into a scientific environment and analyzed by people who understand what’s going on.
  • How can one become a scientist like you? I am not a good role model as a scientist because I left academia eight years ago and moved on to consulting. However, the most important thing is to have a curious and critical mind and not be intimidated by titles and authorities even if you are not yet part of them.
