Sustainability & Responsibility

Sustainability confronts companies with strategic, regulatory and societal challenges. I support you in aligning sustainability with your goals, values and business reality — with analytical depth, long-standing experience and a clear, precise use of language.

My work ranges from the development of comprehensive sustainability strategies to issue-specific position papers and training concepts. I work closely with you – pragmatically, with a sharp eye for opportunities and tensions. By doing so, I help you clarify positions, involve stakeholders and shape sustainability in a credible and effective way.

What I focus on

Sustainability requires clarity amid complexity. I work with organisations that want to understand how responsibility translates into structures, strategies and decisions. Together, we examine what sustainability means in their specific context – and how to define goals that are not only easy to communicate but genuinely manageable.

We clarify the role that values, employee motivation and organisational culture play, how reporting and storytelling can remain credible, and we define priorities in stakeholder relations, supply chains and investment strategies. The goal is to strike a balance between ambition and feasibility, facts and stories, individual commitment and regulation.

Practice

My work combines strategic depth with tangible results. I advise banks, pension funds, foundations and international companies – and occasionally organisations in industry and consumer goods – from the initial discussion on values through to implementation in governance, investment or reporting.

This includes developing sustainability strategies for pension funds, insurers and software companies, including materiality assessments and stakeholder surveys, running workshops on sustainable regional development, and designing a comprehensive sustainability training programme for 800 employees of a Swiss bank.

More about my approach can be found here.

From research to practice

A turning point in my career was “The Corporate Social Responsibility Story of Chiquita”, a project I carried out on behalf of a foundation. The study was based on an “open book analysis”: Chiquita opened its book and internal processes, and I led an external team that independently assessed the company’s sustainability strategy – in direct interaction with the company and with critical stakeholders.

This project marked my transition from academia to advisory work. In the midst of tensions between social, environmental and economic realities, it became clear that sustainability can only work when grounded in a well-defined understanding of responsibility.

Even ten years later, the study remains relevant, as it exemplifies how much sustainability depends on transparency and on the willingness to acknowledge and work with contradictions.
